Samsung and OpenAI Announce Strategic Alliance to Build Next-Generation Global AI Infrastructure

Samsung has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to jointly advance the development of global AI infrastructure. According to Samsung, OpenAI’s demand for memory is rising at an unprecedented pace, with monthly requirements projected to reach as high as 900,000 DRAM wafers in the near future. Samsung intends to meet this need through its high-performance, energy-efficient DRAM product line.

Beyond memory supply, Samsung emphasized its differentiated capabilities in advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration technologies, enabling the company to deliver tailored solutions for OpenAI’s system requirements. This move positions Samsung not merely as a memory supplier, but as a comprehensive semiconductor partner, leveraging its design and packaging expertise to reinforce its strategic role in the AI era.

Subsidiary Samsung SDS, which provides ICT services, will also participate in the collaboration by offering design, deployment, and management support in data centers, helping enterprises integrate OpenAI’s models into internal systems. Furthermore, Samsung SDS will serve as OpenAI’s official distributor in South Korea, promoting enterprise-grade applications such as ChatGPT Enterprise and accelerating AI transformation among local businesses.

Of particular note, Samsung SDS will cooperate with OpenAI on the ambitious “Stargate” AI data center project, combining its advanced data center expertise to provide foundational infrastructure for the growing demands of global AI computing.

In addition to conventional data center initiatives, Samsung will explore cross-division innovations. Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries plan to develop offshore floating data centers, utilizing seawater for natural cooling to reduce energy consumption while addressing the limitations of land-based resources. Though technically challenging, such a design could reduce carbon emissions and enhance the sustainability of AI computing if successfully implemented.

At the enterprise application level, Samsung disclosed plans to expand its internal adoption of ChatGPT on a larger scale to drive workflow automation, document processing, and cross-department collaboration, thereby fostering a fully AI-powered work environment.

This partnership not only consolidates Samsung’s position as the world’s largest memory manufacturer, but also underscores its determination to become a key enabler in the global AI infrastructure race. As generative AI continues to drive explosive demand for computing power and memory, Samsung stands to gain advantages not only through hardware supply but also via vertically integrated initiatives spanning data center construction, energy management, and enterprise AI adoption.

For OpenAI, the alliance ensures stable and efficient access to hardware and infrastructure at a time when model training and inference scales are expanding rapidly, laying the groundwork for the future Stargate super data center project.

Taken as a whole, this collaboration is far more than a semiconductor supply deal—it represents a global strategic alliance poised to shape the next stage of AI ecosystem development.
