Once the defining name in note-taking applications, Evernote had seen its presence wane in recent years. Yet under the stewardship of Italian developer Bending Spoons, the platform has undergone its most significant transformation since 2020, with the release of version 11. This sweeping update not only fully integrates AI technologies but also introduces a new intelligent note-taking assistant developed in collaboration with OpenAI, finally delivering the long-awaited semantic search feature that users have anticipated for over a decade.
Bending Spoons stated that Evernote v11 represents the culmination of more than 200 improvements made since its acquisition, aiming to redefine the role of note-taking tools in the age of artificial intelligence. Evernote’s Product Lead, Federico Simionato, remarked, “We want users to rediscover Evernote’s speed, stability, and completeness — this is no longer the sluggish, cumbersome version they remember.”
One of the centerpiece additions in Evernote v11 is the AI Assistant, co-developed with OpenAI. The feature enables users to search, generate, and expand upon content directly within their notes using natural language interaction. Through conversational prompts, users can ask the assistant to organize data, insert scheduling information, or generate concise summaries.
According to the company, additional capabilities such as automatic tagging and batch note management are planned for future updates. Bending Spoons also emphasized that the AI Assistant will be available exclusively to paid subscribers and comes with fine-grained privacy controls. All data processing adheres to strict confidentiality standards, and OpenAI does not use user content for model training.
Another long-awaited enhancement is the Semantic Search feature, which goes beyond traditional keyword-based search by interpreting contextual meaning to locate relevant notes. Even if a specific keyword is absent, the system identifies related entries based on semantic connections. For example, a search for “Barcelona trip” could also retrieve notes referencing nearby Girona, accurately understanding the relationship. This capability has been hailed as one of the most anticipated innovations by long-time Evernote users.
Additionally, the platform expands its recording and transcription functions. Building upon the AI Transcribe technology introduced in 2024, version 11 can automatically record online or in-person meetings and generate summaries in real time. This feature will be available across all language versions of Evernote, further enhancing cross-platform productivity.
Evernote v11’s new capabilities are currently rolling out on desktop and web platforms, with mobile updates scheduled in the coming weeks. All features will initially be reserved for premium users, though Bending Spoons has announced upcoming pricing adjustments and a trial program for free-tier users.
This landmark update marks a pivotal moment for Evernote’s resurgence — a long-established name reclaiming its place in the spotlight, ready to thrive once more in the era of artificial intelligence.
